Plastic Surgeon in New Jersey Overviews the Recovery Process for Blepharoplasty
Dr. Christopher P. Godek of the Personal Enhancement Center discusses what patients can generally expect in regard to recovery from eyelid surgery.
Toms River, NJ — For many women and men seeking to rejuvenate the appearance of their eyelids and the surrounding area, blepharoplasty can often be an excellent solution, states Monmouth County plastic surgeon Christopher P. Godek, MD. Commonly called eyelid surgery, he says this procedure can be performed to remove lax, excess skin, diminish fat buildups, smooth lines and wrinkles, and address various other signs of aging in the upper and/or lower eyelids. Furthermore, he adds, blepharoplasty can help improve the field of vision for individuals whose eyesight may be obstructed by redundant, drooping skin in the upper lids.
To be considered a good candidate for blepharoplasty, Dr. Godek explains that patients must not only have appropriate aging indications in the eye region, but also possess a clear understanding of all the procedure entails, including what to expect during recovery. Though this aspect of surgery may vary by individual – as well as whether or not the procedure was performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both – he notes that the majority of patients should plan on allowing approximately one to two weeks for healing following treatment.
Throughout this time, Dr. Godek says some degree of bruising and/or puffiness in the eyelids is normal and should gradually subside within about a week. Rest is paramount during the first few days of recovery, as is avoiding anything that may cause excessive eye strain, he notes. Some patients may experience sensitivity to bright lights initially, he adds, but pain should generally not be an issue as any postoperative discomfort is typically described as mild, and medication can be provided if needed.
Although most individuals can return to office jobs and non-strenuous work after one to two weeks, Dr. Godek stresses that patients should refrain from vigorous exercise and highly physical activities for at least four to six weeks. Resuming demanding activities too early may impede the healing process, he states, as well as negatively affect the final results of the procedure.
Ultimately, Dr. Godek again notes that recovery from blepharoplasty will be unique to the individual and the complexity of his or her procedure. For this reason, he advises anyone interested in eyelid surgery to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon who can provide a more personalized outline of what to expect based on their specific needs and desires.
