Breast reduction can alleviate a host of problems, both medical and emotional. The weight of exceptionally large breasts can result in neck and back pain, as well as indentations on the shoulders caused by bra straps. Breast reduction surgery can reduce excess tissue and fat in the breasts, addressing many of the problems associated with excessively large breasts and helping to make one feel less self-conscious in social situations.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Christopher Godek, MD, also certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, strives to understand each patient’s unique motivation for considering cosmetic enhancement. This commitment to aesthetic goals is especially evident when his patients are considering breast reduction surgery. Our New Jersey plastic surgeon creates customized treatment plans designed to meet the unique needs of each patient with beautiful results.
Breast reduction can be an excellent option for women who have overly large breasts and wish to bring them into better proportion with the rest of their body. With a breast reduction New Jersey patients can experience additional physical and psychological benefits of treatment, including:
Along with these benefits, breast reduction surgery also provides the simultaneous advantage of a breast lift for the majority of patients, helping to raise the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest wall.
At our practice in New Jersey breast reduction surgery is carefully designed to decrease your breast size, giving you more comfort and providing natural-looking curves. Good candidates for this procedure are often bothered by one or more of the following issues:
It is important to note that these are simply a few of several problems expressed by women with overly large breasts. Our experienced plastic surgeon will be happy to listen to your concerns during a consultation to determine whether or not breast reduction surgery would be right for you.
At the Godek Center, Dr. Godek uses the most advanced limited-scar breast reduction techniques available. These surgical methods are designed to leave as minimal post-surgical scarring as possible—which is usually the main concern among prospective patients. During the breast reduction procedure, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are carefully removed. This helps to reshape the breasts, making them smaller, firmer, and more proportionate. Once an ideal size and shape is achieved, the remaining skin is tightened around the newly contoured breast. The entire procedure usually requires about three hours to complete, and patients are generally able to return home later the same day with the assistance of a close friend or family member.
While there is usually some swelling and bruising after breast reduction surgery, these side effects tend to fade quickly as the breasts heal. A notable amount of pain is rare, and patients often report that any discomfort or soreness can be easily alleviated with medication. Normal daily activities—such as office jobs, school, and/or running errands around town—may usually be resumed within the first few weeks, though heavy exercise or strenuous physical activity should be avoided until healing is complete and you are comfortable enough to engage in it. Returning to activities that affect and/or place strain on the chest (or surrounding areas) before the breasts are fully healed can compromise the final outcome of treatment.
Most patients who are able to breastfeed before breast reduction surgery should still be able to breastfeed after the procedure, depending on the specific techniques utilized. Many women are unable to breastfeed regardless of whether or not they undergo breast surgery; however, if you have breastfed before, this surgery should not affect that ability as long as the breast reduction technique is one that does not involve alterations to the milk ducts and other areas that may have an impact on breastfeeding. Please talk with our plastic surgeon about your goals regarding future breastfeeding and they can create a treatment plan using techniques designed to accommodate your wishes.
In general, the majority of women who need a breast reduction will also require a lift. When excess breast volume is removed during the breast reduction procedure, patients are often left with a notable amount of loose, extra skin. Fortunately, the breast reduction procedure involves a certain amount of breast reshaping, which typically results in a “lifting” effect for most patients.
While it may sound a bit contradictory, there are some cases where the overall results of a breast reduction can be more ideal if the patient has breast implants placed as well. Although it is not very common or necessary for most patients to have a combination breast reduction/breast implants procedure, some women may need implants to achieve the specific breast shape they desire after a reduction. This is typically beneficial for those who want to improve shape and contour in the upper pole area of the breasts. Dr. Godek can discuss this option with you and determine whether implants may be necessary to achieve your goals.
Scarring is an inevitable part of any procedure that requires incisions. That said, our doctors utilize limited-scar breast reduction techniques whenever possible, and they instruct each patient on how to properly care for their incisions following treatment to help ensure potential scarring is as minimal as possible. In the end, all breast reduction scars can usually be hidden underneath most articles of clothing (including many bras and swimsuits), and the majority of women say the results of treatment far outweigh any worries they had about scarring to begin with.
Breast reduction may be covered by insurance for some individuals, but unfortunately, this is not always the case. Our staff at the Godek Center is happy to help patients get in touch with their insurance provider to find out if treatment is paid for under their specific policy. In the event the procedure is not covered, our practice offers various plastic surgery payment and financing options to help make breast reduction an affordable reality for virtually any budget.
Achieving smaller breasts without breast reduction surgery can be possible for some individuals, depending on the exact nature of their condition. In some cases, diet and exercise can have an effect on the breasts if the excess is primarily caused by fat, rather than glandular tissue. If excess glandular tissue is causing the concern, surgery is often the only effective option to reduce the size of the breasts.
